What is NLP?

Neuro-Linguistic Programming has many profound strengths, which have benefited a great number of people over the last twenty-five years.

NLP can be defined as the study of excellence in human performance and its translation into practical skills that other people can use effectively. It was born when a linguist, John Grinder, and a mathematician Richard Bandler, asked themselves a simple yet fascinating question: What makes the difference between someone who excels at a skill and someone with basic competence?

Learning Excellence

Convention suggests that either some people have natural gifts or talents or that practice and experience give results. NLP replies by identifying "strategies" or patterns of thought and behaviour used by the expert that the novice can readily learn. Benefit comes from turning the competent person's performance into one of excellence.

These questions and the pursuit of their answers have evolved into a vast body of NLP knowledge renowned for its effectiveness in achieving results.

Modelling

The NLP "modelling" process has long been used in relation to the natural world. Most of the science we now call engineering, for example, came about by people studying what worked in natural structures, working out the principles involved and then applying the same principles to new structures. NLP courses teach the tools, techniques and approaches that have been identified by these modelling processes. However, NLP practitioners learn to apply them to the skills and behaviours of people rather than the characteristics of physical objects.

The Benefits of NLP

Applications of NLP extend to all areas of personal and professional skills. Here are just some of the benefits of NLP:

  • Helps people to communicate effectively with themselves and others
  • Increases choice so people can be free of negative states & behaviour
  • Builds flexible belief structures to help people let go of non-useful beliefs
  • Achieves desired outcomes by allowing people to become outcome-orientated
  • Helps people to achieve excellence in whatever area of their life they want to succeed through modelling
